US Wind Power Achieves 30 Percent in Four States

US Wind Power Achieves 30 Percent in Four States

Wind power is now supplying more than 30 percent of the electricity in four states — Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, and South Dakota — according to data recently released in the American Wind Energy Association’s (AWEA) U.S. Wind Industry Annual Market Report 2017.

AWEA said that New Mexico added wind power capacity at a faster rate than any other state last year.

According to the new report, the industry employs a record 105,500 people across all 50 states.

“American wind power reached new heights for energy generated and U.S. jobs in 2017. And don’t be surprised when the industry continues to break records,” Tom Kiernan, CEO of AWEA, said in a statement. “Wind is competitively priced, reliable, and clean — a winning combination that’s creating economic growth in all 50 states.”

AWEA said that, nationally, 14 states generate more than 10 percent of their electricity from wind. In addition, the installation of 7,017 MW of wind in 2017 brings total U.S. installed wind power capacity to 88,973 MW from 54,000 wind turbines operating in 41 states, Guam and Puerto Rico.

The people and technology driving the trends in AWEA’s latest annual market report will gather in Chicago, May 7-10, for the WINDPOWER Conference and Exhibition.

AWEA: Wind powers forward to reach 30% in four states

Wind power, the largest source of U.S. renewable electricity generating capacity, now supplies more than 30% of the electricity in four states, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, and South Dakota, after strong growth in 2017. Industry leaders released the news from the state capitol in New Mexico, a rising star for wind power. New Mexico added wind power capacity at a faster rate than any other state last year.

The rapid expansion of American wind power reflects its key role at the center of a transformation in the country’s electricity sector – bringing consumers more affordable, clean, and reliable energy while growing the economy. The industry’s latest trends and milestones from 2017 are detailed in the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) U.S. Wind Industry Annual Market Report 2017 released today.

“American wind power reached new heights for energy generated and U.S. jobs in 2017. And don’t be surprised when the industry continues to break records,” said Tom Kiernan, CEO of AWEA. “Wind is competitively priced, reliable, and clean – a winning combination that’s creating economic growth in all 50 states.”

Renewable energy generated 104% of Portugal's electricity

Renewable energy generated 104% of Portugal's electricity consumption in March

Most of the energy came from wind and hydroelectric power

Portugal generated more renewable energy than it needed in March, for the first time in at least 40 years.

Energy from renewable sources made up 103.6 per cent of mainland electricity consumption last month, according to data from the country’s power grid operator REN, although fossil fuels were used to occasionally top up the electricity supply.

The second-highest level of 99.2 per cent was set in 2014.

A report by the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association and the sustainability group ZERO, said the achievement was an “example” of what the future holds for renewable energy.

“It is expected that by 2040 the production of renewable electricity will be able to guarantee, in a cost-effective way, the total annual electricity consumption of mainland Portugal,” it said.
